MEET THE MEMBER – APRIL 2018 – MARTIN GWATKIN

1 What do you do for a living? What would you do if your job didn’t exist?

I am a contracts manager for a trenchless technology company which I have been doing for 15 years. This role has taken me to many different parts of the world such as Australia, Egypt, Asia and Germany. If my job didn’t exist I don’t think a racing driver would have been a bad deal!!

2 Spring seems to have finally made an appearance. What’s the best part of the season for you?

Feeling the sun on my bones.

3 You’ve been with Brawd for 6 months: which three memories come to mind?

Bootcamp down Barry Island when the waves were coming over the beach wall.
‘The travelling bootcamp’ round Whitmore to Jacksons Bay down to Maslin Park and back to Marcos.
Porthkerry up by the viaduct across a few fields and in the caravan park by the airport and then back down to Porthkerry.

4 We’re off to Cornwall in a few weeks in a few weeks for this year’s Big Brawd Adventure: what have you heard about previous trips and what are you expecting?

Previous trips I don’t really know, but other members have said it was one of the best trips they have ever had. What I am expecting is getting wet enjoying the outdoor activities.

5 You were brought up in Barry, which three ‘hidden gems’ would you show a visitor? (Can be places, experiences or people)?

Jacksons Bay/BYC.
Hang Fire.
Walking along the coast.

6 Has what you eat on a regular basis changed at all since joining Brawd?

It did, but the exercise has increased my appetite!!

7 Have you ever been a professional sportsman? If now, which sport would you love to be paid to take part in?

Never, but Formula 1 would be nice.

8 Have you taken part in any Obstacle Course Races (OCRs)? If so, which ones and what was your experience like?

Invincible Merthyr Mawr – really good fun and very much enjoyed.
Looking forward to Invincible Pembrey and Tough Mudder.
On another note, Darth was a challenge I didn’t think I would be ready for but was chuffed to complete.

9. Press ‘shuffle’ on your iPod/phone/cassette collection: randomly which 5 songs come up first?

Another Brick in The Wall – Pink Floyd
Cheerleader – Felix Jaehn Remix
America – Neil Diamond
Dakota – Sterophonics
Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon

10. What impact has Brawd had on your life?

A lot of home deliveries from several sports shops but seriously, it had made me improve my lifestyle.

11. What are your health and fitness goals moving forward?

Lose weight, Cardiff half and maintain current commitment, work permitting.

12. What is your favourite nutritious meal and what is your guilty pleasure?

Heck fat free sausages are the way forward but can’t completely give up the Gin and chocolate.
