I try to keep work and home life as separate as possible. I’ve learned over the years to just not take work home with me. I work for Fujitsu, a Japanese IT Services and Products company. I’m a Programme Office Manager. That means I look after [manage] specialists that deliver support services to IT programmes. That’s not where my working life started though. When I left school in the days of black & white television I did an apprenticeship as an electrician. That moved me around technical fields in the industry, eventually leading to IT. When I first moved to Wales in 1988 after meeting the love of my life, Nicola, I worked for Torfaen Borough Council, rewiring council houses in Blaenavon. Wow, some stories there….
Home life is completely different. We moved to Barry Island from Caerphilly in 2014 and haven’t looked back. Nicola is vegetarian and loves cooking, which is great for me. When I work away I’ll eat as much meat as possible. I’m generally an outdoorsy type person. Not that fussed on telly unless it’s Sport. We have 2 daughters, Bethany who’s just turned 29 and is living in France (Lyon). She and her boyfriend Florian have just announced their engagement. And there’s Grace, she’s 24 and just taken residence in a shared house in Roath. She works with young people with specific health needs. She loves it!
What secret skill do you have that would surprise your fellow Brawd members?
I can levitate, I can fly and I can move objects with my mind. However I am unable to demonstrate these as they’d no longer be secrets.
Summer time!! It’s hawt (slash rainy)! What’s the best aspects of the season and what have you been up to?
Sunshine, blue sky and smiling faces. I love it. Happy people, happy dogs, life just feels better when the sun shines and the days are long. We’re enjoying the garden in this weather. The cider, gin, wine and prosecco help of course. We’ve got 2 dogs, a 15 year old Patterdale bitch called Lucy. She’s on her last legs really, demented and always, always snaffling for food. Then there’s Milo. He’s become a bit of a BRAWD mascot on some of the Saturday morning Porthkerry yomps. If I’m not doing one of these, then I’m probably BRAWDing somewhere or under orders to do DIY.
What’s the best and most hilarious thing your kid(s) have ever done/said?
Ah …. anyone remember bumble balls, they were a kind of ball with nodules on and battery operated; they kind of wiggled their way around the room and babies would play with them. Well, one of my daughters had other ideas about how to play with one. She lay down in a doctors waiting room and held this vibrating ball in her nether region. She then blurted out, as happily as a kid would, it’s tickling my fanny, with uncontrollable laughter!!
HAHA! The above has to be included in the wedding speech! If your current body was suddenly inhabited by your five-year-old self, what is the first thing you’d do?
Wow, that’s a question. I’d crap myself probably; wondering where my 5 year old body was and why am I in a museum piece “do people really get that old?” That’d take about 8 seconds and then I’d just do things anyway. Come to think of it, I am a bit of a kid at heart so I wouldn’t be much different I expect. I’d probably try and fart and then go and build a tree house or Go-Kart.
What is your favourite nutritious meal and what is your guilty pleasure?
I like a proper pub ploughman’s. I like Mackerel with salad and in this weather that’s the first thing that comes to mind. I like most food, but find humus a bit of a waste of time.
As for guilty pleasure then it’s lamb. In curry or roasted or any other edible form, I love it.
If you were a ghost where/who would you haunt? Why?
10 Downing Street. The Prime Minister or any other useless politician. They all seem so self-serving these days I have little faith in their values to serve us, so a gentle reminder now and again might help.
What do you love and hate most about Barry?
I love it all! Great town, great open spaces, fantastic people. Lifestyle and wellbeing are better now than in previous years.
I hate the amount of litter visitors leave when they visit the Island. I love the fact that the Island has a fairground and rides, but I hate the fact it looks like a building site, which isn’t a good impression.
Which part of Brawd training do you excel at and which do you have to work at? Where’s your favourite place to train and time?
I don’t excel at any of it. Some sessions I survive better than others. Depends who is coaching as well. I typically do Monday at AWCF, Thursday evenings & Saturday mornings (wherever they are). The beach or Porthkerry are my favourites depending on the weather. I enjoy the yomps, the banter and breakfast at Marco’s. That said a moist Monday is always a good workout, but then it’s Craig or Andy G and not Lloydy ☺!!
What’s the weirdest nickname someone has for you and what’s the story behind it?
Decline to answer – too many memories I wish to keep buried.
If you had one week left to live, what would you do?
Ah, now are we talking all life extinction (impending nuclear war or asteroid blitz) or just me?
If it was life extinction then I’d get as many kicks as possible. Drugs, sex and rock ‘n roll. Actually, forget the music, or at least it’s not as important…..
If it was just me then I’d want to do (depending on cause of death)
Day 1: Skydive
Day 2: Scuba dive the barrier reef and a shipwreck
Day 3: Win the lottery and give all the money away
Day 4: Drive insanely fast on a race track
Day 5: Bungee jump
Day 6: Donate all my useful organs
Day 7: Get high see my family (including the dogs)
What’s your favourite adventure sport? and your experiences of it? What would you like to try?
I like the idea of white water rapids/kayaking, or hang-gliding. I’ve never tried either. I don’t think I’ll be doing Monster SUP anytime soon. I enjoyed the coasteering on BBA2019 and am keen to give that another go. Other than that I’d try most things.. I think.
What’s your Fitness & Health goals moving forward?
Need to lose the dad bod/belly a bit, otherwise to remain as mobile as possible, as happy as possible and continue to develop and be part of the great social network that is BRAWD. I’ll keep going until the body tells me otherwise.
